Star Wars Outlaws gameplay looks like Grand Theft Auto: Tatooine

Ubisoft already teased Star Wars fans with a brief trailer for Star Wars Outlaws during the Xbox Summer Game Fest presentation. However, it was saving all the big, juicy gameplay details for its own showcase. Ubisoft closed its presentation with a 10-minute extended look at Outlaws’ gameplay and the kinds of scum and villainy you can get up to in all the wretched hives of the galaxy.

In Star Wars Outlaws, you play as Kay Vess, someone who Ubisoft calls a “scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life.” In the gameplay trailer, she certainly feels like an outlaw, quick to pull blasters on people in a way that would please the “Han shot first” contingent. Outlaws features a choice system, with the trailer showing off a scene in which Kay has the option to bribe an Imperial agent. There’s also a wanted system in which Kay’s actions increase her infamy with the Empire, which will respond with ever-increasing power the more Kay becomes a threat.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage gets new story trailer and gameplay demo

At its big summer showcase, Ubisoft provided the best look yet at the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage. To start, a new story trailer gave a better look at the new assassin, Basim, and the 9th century version of Baghdad he’ll be exploring in the game. You can check it out above.

Perhaps more interesting, though, was a deep dive into the gameplay. Mirage is billed as a game that returns to style of the original Assassin’s Creed games, which is to say fewer RPG elements, and more focus on parkour, stealth, and, well, assassinations. The gameplay walkthrough showed Basim running and climbing his way through the city, while using tools like a blow dart and smoke bomb to dispatch of enemies as cleanly as possible. Also, he has a very good scout bird named Enkidu.

Nobody tell Ubisoft we left sea shanties back in 2020.

Skull and Bones, the Ubisoft pirate game, has been so delayed, its only just now getting to the part of pop culture history when we were all obsessed with sea shanties. No release date yet (again), but the game is getting a closed beta in August. Sign up for access here.

Assassin’s Creed Nexus brings first-person assassinations to VR

Assassin’s Creed is heading to virtual reality. At its Ubisoft Forward event, the publisher properly unveiled Assassin’s Creed Nexus, which is coming to the Meta Quest 2 and 3 (it’s launching “holiday 2023”) and will be the first game in the series to give players a first-person perspective on the world of assassins.

The game will be a greatest hits of sorts, letting players take on the role of three different characters from past AC games — Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor — so they can explore “untold stories” set in three different time periods. The game will let players physically act out classic AC moves, so that they can perform kills and more naturally use their various, deadly weapons; reaching over your shoulder to grab a bow, for instance, or a subtle flick of the wrist to unleash a hidden blade. You’ll also be able to do the iconic leap of faith, which sounds a little terrifying in VR.

Video game animated adapatations are so back.

During Ubisoft Forward 2023, Adi Shankar, producer on the Netflix Castlevania series, mounted the stage wearing light-up wraparound glasses (??) and clothes that can only be described as futurepunk on a budget, to introduce the trailer for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix — an animated series that looks like Far Cry: Blood Dragon and a diehard Ubisoft fan’s fever dream.

The Division Resurgence hits smartphones this fall

The Division is coming to your smartphone later this year. At its Ubisoft Forward event, the company confirmed that The Division Resurgence, a mobile spinoff of the near-future shooter series, will be launching in fall 2023.

As with the previous games in the series, Resurgence is set in a “mid-crisis” version of New York, one thrown into a crisis following an outbreak of a genetically engineered virus known as the “dollar flu.” And like those games, the mobile version is a cross between an open world game, where you can explore the city and take on missions, and a multiplayer experience where you can squad up with friends. Ubisoft describes it as a “true MMO experience.”

We need a Prince of Persia animated series ASAP.

Ubisoft gave a deeper look at the gameplay of the recently announced Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but I can’t get enough of this animated trailer. This franchise clearly needs an Arcane-style streaming series.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is coming out later this year

Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a video game entry in James Cameron’s hit movie franchise, is coming out on December 7th, the company announced at its Ubisoft Forward event on Monday. In addition to some details on the game’s story, a new trailer showed some brief glimpses at the first-person action-adventure experience. In addition to exploring the colorful world of Pandora as a Na’vi, you’ll be doing some skydiving and, uh, shooting guns. (The protagonist was apparently has military training from humans.)

The game is a first-person action-adventure experience and has an all new story. “In this new, standalone story, play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora,” the website says. “Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters, and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.” You’ll also be able to play the full story with a friend in online co-op.
